Insights from the
Creative Diversity Network
The UK film and television industry has made strides in promoting diversity on screen, but behind the scenes, the picture remains less inclusive. According to the Creative Diversity Network’s “Diamond: The Third Cut” report, only 12.3% of off-screen roles were filled by individuals from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds, significantly lower than the UK population’s 14% BAME representation. Additionally, women are underrepresented in key technical and senior roles, comprising just 30% of the workforce in these positions. The statistics are even more stark for disabled individuals, who account for only 5.8% of off-screen roles, despite making up nearly 19% of the working-age population. These figures highlight the ongoing need for initiatives that address the lack of diversity in film and TV crewing, ensuring that the industry reflects the society it serves.
